Blaze
Companion Horse
Blaze is a sweet boy and approximately 17 - 18 years old. He was surrendered by a lovely family who wanted him to have a better life. Blaze is living with the lower herd and has shown that he is solid on the ground and we're assessing his comfort and interest in under saddle work. Blaze arrived in August 2024.

Reba
Companion Horse
Reba is a mustang mare in her late teens. She is approximately 14 hands and has a beautiful chestnut coat with some roaning.
She was once hard to catch but is now eager to be caught and allows others, like our veterinarian, to help. She is easy to lead, groom, and handle, though she shows some anxiety and separation issues.
She has done a small amount of ridden work and although she hesitantly participates with some anxiety, we are assessing if she should be considered a companion horse only.

Atria
Companion Horse
Atria's owner moved from the area years ago, but continued to pay for her expenses. Recently it became clear that it was time for Atria to find a new person, so her owner kindly entrusted her to us.
​
Atria is in her early to mid-20's and will require a specific living situation to feel confident and calm. She does tend to get anxious and is very dependent on an equine buddy. Atria needs to trust that she isn't going to be separated from that buddy, and is eager to find a more peaceful way of being, so if you have a horse with separation anxiety, this companion horse is for you!
Fluffy
Light Riding Horse
Fluffy is a gorgeous 16.1h bay cross bred gelding. He joins HBHER as an owner surrender from a loving home in Washington State.
There are many reasons for owner surrenders. Often financial hardship or unexpected life events are involved. In Fluffy's case, HBHER is honored to share that Fluffy came to us specifically because of our mission: to build lasting partnerships based on trust and fellowship using reward based management.
Fluffy has early degenerative joint disease in his right carpus (knee). His current lameness is very mild, but will be slowly progressive and will limit his athletic activity as years pass. Rather than selling him "as is" and taking the serious risk of Fluffy ending up in harms way, his owner transported him to us from Washington knowing that he will be evaluated carefully and matched with an adopter and adoption contract that ensures his long term safety and well-being.

Fluffy is a presence and we enjoy seeing him every day in the Lower Herd with his various mare companions. He's the first to call out when he sees us! When around humans and working in the arena, he is an absolutely charming gentleman.
Lulu
(also known as Princess Lulu)
Meet "Princess Lulu", surrendered in Sept 2025.
Once upon a time on the range...
In 2018, a princess was born in the Virginia Range - a beautiful filly from a majestic bloodline - her range name was Nora and she held within her the promise of a long life as a wild and free mustang. Unfortunately, she was born with a congenital issue with her front hooves, occurring statistically more often in her particular bloodline. Even the significant walking across the range done by wild horses did not keep her club foot in check. When Nora was a yearling, a resident of the remote area of the range that her family frequented, fell in love with her and asked if she could take her in. The resident worked through the State of Nevada and was granted permission to adopt the filly. Nora, now Lulu, was very well-cared for at her new home and regular corrective farrier work kept her club foot in check.

Sadly, Lulu's adopter underwent several life changes and determined she can no longer care for Lulu. Through no fault of her own, this sweet cuddle bug, Virginia Range royalty, who has never known mistreatment, is looking for a new kingdom. Lulu is a low-maintenance mare, except for the required corrective trims to manage her club foot, and not afraid of new people or things. Lulu will do great in an environment where she is treated like the princess she is, and her hooves maintained regularly.

We have been assessing Lulu's physical and mental/emotional capabilities and preferences. There have been no problems with saddling, girthing, lining up at the block, leaning over her back, etc. Lulu is now very comfortable with walking, turning and stopping with Ari on her back, and we're working on increasing the distance between grain bowls and will soon begin introducing tactile cues, like a gentle squeeze of the leg. We are considering her as amenable to light riding.
Lulu is available for the right adopter, who would need to be a petite person if riding her, as Lulu is very small (12.3 hands) and would need to be dedicated to continuing Lulu's training, or for an experienced adolescent.

Flynn

We welcomed Flynn in late September as one of our owner-surrender horses. A 17-year-old OTTB, or Off Track Thoroughbred, Flynn has already proven his resilience and determination. The 'off-track' designation is a testament to his courage and adaptability as he's finished his racing career and is now ready for new adventures.

Flynn had a rough time loading to come here. We started working with him 5 days a week, 2-3 times per day to get him comfortable approaching and finally loading in and he's been so calm and brave so far - he's really made all of us so proud!
We had been told that Flynn is not only rideable, but also excels in everything on the ground. Ari's first sit on Flynn was the last week of April 2026, and he was perfect! Since then, Ari has been able to ride Flynn in the arena and is working toward seeing what kind of a trail horse he could possibly be. Flynn continues to charm us and we love seeing how amenable he is in all areas of horse life.

Sable

Sable came to us in November 2025 and is a beautiful, (approx.) 13-year-old Arab type grade mare. Her owner worked very hard with her and got her solid for ground handling, but they were never able to transition that understanding to under-saddle work. Her owner knew they were not a good fit together and felt that the positive reinforcement focused work that we do here was Sable's best shot at preparing for and finding the right home.
So far she is very sweet, though can be on the anxious side. She is now settling into life with the lower herd. Diana, one of our volunteers has a lovely bond with Sable, and she and Ari have been working with Sable quite a bit in the arena. Sable is learning to seek grain bowls under saddle. The grain bowls can help give a horse direction without depending on someone leading them. They can be a really helpful intermediary step for horses uncertain about going forward and/or having trouble building duration forward. Diana is diligently working with Sable several times a week and it's definitely paying off!
